Breast Augmentation Surgery

Breast augmentation surgery, augmentation mammoplasty, is the most commonly performed of all the various plastic surgery procedures done for women. Most women will want either fuller breasts (enlargement) or a restoration of volume following weight loss, illness, or pregnancy (enhancement). The shapes of the implants vary from the teardrop to the round. The round is the most requested as it appears the most natural. It is recommended that if a woman has severely drooping breast tissue, she have a breast lift procedure which is done in conjunction with the augmentation.

For many ladies, the positives outweigh the negatives. Breast augmentation surgery can improve ones body image, self-esteem, and achieve the best balance of the figure possible. This balance comes from even breast size and shape. Think about the freedom to go without a bra, or even with just a minimal one! They look and feel totally natural. Now for the risks and possible complications. One must remember that for every procedure done there are possible complications. You must discuss these with your doctor. A few of the risks and complications are infection, bleeding, implant rupture or leakage, blood clots, persistent pain, breast or nipple sensation changes, wrinkling of the skin over the implant, and incisions which may be slow to heal. There may be others which pertain to your individual case. You will be asked to sign a consent form which says you do understand the involved risks.

The types of implants from which to chose are either saline implants or silicone implants. The saline implants are filled with sterile saline solution (salt water). The size, shape, and feel of the saline implants depend on the amount of solution in the implant shell. If they do happen to leak, the saline solution will be absorbed and eliminated by the body. The implant shell will collapse. These implants have the least risks for complications. The silicone implants are filled with an elastic gel which feels quite like the real thing! This is what made the silicone implants so popular. The problems can come if the implants leak. With silicone, the gel may remain within the implant or leak in to the bodies tissues. With this implant, regular visits to the plastic surgeon may be recommended to monitor the implants. Silicone implants are F.D.A. approved for women 22 years and older while saline implants can be used by women 18 years and over.

The majority of women will experience a post-surgical recovery period of 24-48 hrs. with additional down time. This additional time is a period of light activity and will generally last for a few days. Soreness will persist for a few weeks. Follow your surgeons individual instructions and make a follow up appointment soon after surgery. Often Tylenol or an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory will work for minor pain and swelling.

Remember that breast augmentation surgery is individualized. It should not be used to attract someone else or fulfill needs, physical or emotional. If unsure about whether to get the procedure, wait. There is always time to decide what is right for you.

Many a surgeon recommends breast augmentation surgery for patients as a means to prevent breast cancer.
